about
We Were Asteroids is ostensibly the story of two asteroids, travelling through the void of space for millions of years, each the other's world entire. However, what happens when one is faced with losing the other?
The song is a metaphor for growing old with someone, facing death with that person and preparing yourself for it.
lyrics
Up in space, up in space,
Where we are stuck,
There is nothing to do,
So we don’t do much.
Oh! We have been orbiting
For seven million years,
You're the one thing that has stayed my tears.
It's the same, it's the same, it's the same old thing.
It's the same, it's the same, it's the same old thing.
A planet and a moon,
It's the same old thing.
But I'm glad I'm with you;
You give it meaning.
Oh! Why do you have to leave?
Why do you slip away?
I can't believe that you're in decay.
It's the same, it's the same, it's the same old thing.
I'm on my feet, I'm coming behind;
I feel the heat and the sound and the light.
As we two asteroids
Become meteorites.
It's the same, it's the same old thing,
Baby I can exlain everything,
Can you hear? Can you hear that sound?
We'll explode before we hit the ground
At Tunguska.
