Many songs aim to capture the feelings experienced in the immediate aftermath of a relationship's demise. Routine, however, takes the long-term approach, looking back from a point in time long after the relationship has ended. In the interim, were personal promises kept and dreams achieved, or did the absence of that inspiring partner lead to a descent into mundanity and, well, routine?
lyrics
Dream number one:
We will both buy a home.
Dreams never come,
I am living on my own
Hey! You! Whatever happened to me?
Do you wonder what happened to me?
Did I make it to the Mississippi
Without you?
(Chorus)
In my daydreams I see you living with me
But all my daydreams are never as black-and-white as they seem
I'm stuck in my routine
I'm stuck in my routine
Dream 24
Seven days of the year
Dream evermore
But I'll still be living here.
Hey I never-- no I'll never know it
Never know but (but) I'll never show it
You took-- you took a picture of me
On the moon.
(Chorus)
(Outro)
Hey! You! Whatever happened to me?
Do you wonder what happened to me?
Did I make it to the Mississippi?
Yes, but I got sucked in by Routine.
